Wireless Dog Fences

When taking home a puppy one of the things that you should think about is fencing.  While this may not be an immediate need, because your puppy will be on leash for a good while, eventually you will probably want and need a safe yard where your dog can live in safety.  There are so many kinds of fences, including wood fences, metal fences, chain link fences, invisible fences and wireless fences.  To be honest, I started researching options after I got a quote for a wired invisible fence, for less than 1/2 an acre for $5,000.  Since that’s what I’m hoping to spend on my entire 17 acres for horse fences, that made me take a step back and then I went straight to google.

Wireless dog fences can start to be used when your puppy turns 6 months old.  Taking the time to train them to the system is important for the most accurate use of the system to make sure your pup stays safe.

There are several reasons why you might choose to use a smart wireless dog fence for your pet:

  1. Convenience: A smart wireless dog fence allows you to create a boundary for your pet without the need for physical barriers such as fences or walls. This can be especially convenient if you have a large property or if you frequently move with your pet.
  2. Customizability: Smart wireless dog fences typically offer a high level of customizability, allowing you to create a boundary that fits your specific needs. This can be useful if you have multiple pets, or if you want to restrict your pet’s access to certain areas of your property.
  3. Safety: A smart wireless dog fence can provide an additional layer of safety for your pet by keeping them within a designated area. This can help prevent accidents such as car collisions or encounters with dangerous wildlife.
  4. Training: Smart wireless dog fences can also be used as a training tool to teach your pet to stay within a certain area. Many systems include a range of correction options, such as vibration or static correction, which can be used to discourage your pet from crossing the boundary.
  5. Peace of mind: Finally, a smart wireless dog fence can provide peace of mind for pet owners by allowing them to monitor their pet’s location in real-time. This can be especially useful for pets with medical conditions or those who are prone to wandering.

Overall, a smart wireless dog fence can be a convenient and effective way to keep your pet safe and secure, while also providing a range of customization and training options.

There are several types of wireless GPS dog fences on the market, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Here’s a comparison of some of the main features of different types of wireless GPS dog fences:

  1. Portable Wireless GPS Dog Fence: These systems are designed to be easily portable and do not require any wires or stakes. They typically use a GPS signal to create a circular boundary around a designated center point. Pros: They are easy to set up and can be used in a variety of locations. Cons: They have a limited range and may not work well in areas with poor GPS signals.
  2. In-Ground Wired GPS Dog Fence: These systems use a combination of GPS and buried wires to create a boundary for your dog. The wires are buried underground and communicate with a GPS-enabled collar worn by your dog. Pros: They have a greater range than portable systems and are typically more reliable. Cons: They require more setup time and may be more difficult to install.
  3. Hybrid Wireless GPS Dog Fence: These systems combine the features of portable and in-ground systems, using GPS to create a boundary while also using wires to enhance the reliability of the system. Pros: They offer a greater range than portable systems and are more reliable than strictly GPS-based systems. Cons: They may be more expensive and difficult to set up than portable systems.
  4. Smart Wireless GPS Dog Fence: These systems use a smartphone app to set up and adjust the boundaries of the fence. They typically use GPS to create a boundary and may also use other technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Pros: They are easy to set up and can be customized to fit your specific needs. Cons: They may be more expensive than other types of GPS dog fences and may require a strong cell phone signal to work properly.

When choosing a wireless GPS dog fence, consider the size and layout of your property, the number of dogs you have, and the features that are most important to you. It’s also important to choose a system that is reliable and easy to use.  When considering the pros and cons we lean to really liking the smart wireless GPS Dog Fences.  This allows you so much freedom in easily moving your fence to different areas, taking it to family homes and even on vacation.

There are several smart wireless GPS dog fence brands on the market, each with their own unique features and benefits. Here’s a comparison of some of the most popular smart wireless GPS dog fence brands.  We’ll start with the collar we like the most and compare others that may also suit your needs.

  1. Halo Collar: The Halo Collar is a smart wireless GPS dog fence that uses a combination of GPS and other technologies to create a reliable boundary. The boundary does not have to be straight lines and can zig-zag anywhere you place up to 20 “online fence posts.”  This is great for awkward shaped yards or places you want your dog to stay out of.  You can create up to 20 different fences saved in your phone.  The system includes a smartphone app that allows you to set up and adjust the boundary, as well as track your dog’s location in real-time.  This system offers 15 levels of static correction. After the initial cost, there are 3 monthly plans to choose from and range from $4.49/month, $9.99/month, and $29.99/month depending on your needs.
Pros: The collar offers both vibration and static correction, and the system is highly customizable.  The collar is also waterproof.
Cons: The system may be considered expensive, however more affordable than several others.  At the time of writing this, it is listed at $649.  A con may also be that there is no shock feature, however for the Newfypoo, we find that they are quick and eager to learn.  The collar may be bulky for smaller dogs.  The features of Halo, combined with the price makes this our top choice of collar.
  2. SpotOn: SpotOn offers a smart wireless GPS dog fence that allows you to create a customizable boundary for your dog using a smartphone app.  They allow you to have a little more customization as you can have up to 1500 “online fence posts.”  The system uses GPS and other technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to create a reliable boundary.  The fenced yard can be as small as a 1/2 an acre and go up to 1000’s of acres.  They offer 30 levels of static correction. Subscription to the cellular towers is optional at $7.95 a month.
Pros: The system is highly customizable, and the collar offers both vibration and static correction.  The collar is also waterproof.
Cons: The system is expensive.  At the time of writing this, it is listed at $1495 and it requires a strong cell phone signal to work properly.  When considering taking it on vacation, you may find the cell service to be a make or break item.
  3. Fi Smart Dog Collar: The Fi Smart Dog Collar is a smart wireless GPS dog fence that uses GPS and other technologies to create a boundary for your dog. The system includes a smartphone app that allows you to set up and adjust the boundary, as well as track your dog’s location in real-time.
Pros: The collar is lightweight and waterproof, and the system is highly customizable.
Cons: I could not find if the collar actually corrects the dog when leaving their designated radius or if it only alerts the owner.  Other web searches says that the collar offers vibration correction.  The system may not work well in areas with poor cell phone signal, which again is a deal breaker for us because of where we live and if we were to take a dog on vacation.  As for cost, Fi works on a membership that ranges between $19/month, $102/6 months, $192/1 year, $336/2 years.
  4. Dogtra Pathfinder: The Dogtra Pathfinder is a smart wireless GPS dog fence that uses GPS and cellular data to create a boundary for your dog. The system includes a smartphone app that allows you to set up and adjust the boundary, as well as track your dog’s location in real-time.
Pros: The collar offers both vibration and static correction, and the system is highly customizable.
Cons: The system can be expensive, and it requires a cellular data plan to work properly.  You also have to carry the receiver with you on your body for it to work with the bluetooth of your phone.  This system is more designed for training than it is fencing, so while very useful for some families, this is not our top pick.
